The Beginnings of the Educational Skate Program in Peru
The program began modestly, with a simple wooden ramp, which we repaired and expanded thanks to a grant from the Australian Embassy. In 2021, with the support of Wall Street Skate Shop and the Concrete Jungle Foundation, we built a complete skatepark that has since become a gathering spot for the community’s youth.
After helping to construct the skatepark, Freddy, who had come to teach skateboarding in a municipal program, took over the direction of Waves Lobitos skate program. Initially, there were only eight skateboards for 32 kids, which posed a real challenge. But with organization and enthusiasm, Freddy ensured that each child could participate and learn.
Skateboarding as a Development Tool
Today, the program welcomes over 60 children and young people, who gather twice a week to learn and practice skateboarding. Many of these children had never skated before, but through this program, they discovered a new sport that allows them to express themselves, overcome fears, and build confidence. It’s more than a pastime: these young people gain qualities they can apply to all areas of their lives.
The skate program in Lobitos goes far beyond teaching a sport. It creates a space where kids can develop, learn values like perseverance and mutual support, and form bonds with others. Skateboarding thus becomes a tool that helps them grow, develop, and explore new opportunities.
”I love skating here. I’ve made friends with kids from Brazil, the United States, Spain, and other countries without even traveling. I faced my fears and insecurities and overcame them. I keep improving and really enjoy skating with my friends in Lobitos.

A Promising Future for Skateboarding in Lobitos
Despite the challenges at the beginning, the skate program continues to grow, attracting more participants each year. The children find more than just a play space here: they discover a place to build themselves, develop their confidence, and grow in a safe environment. Like the other Waves Lobitos programs, this one offers young people a protective framework that steers them away from social risks they might otherwise face.
In 2024, eight young participants had the chance to compete in an event organized in Talara for the Revolución Skate Norte de Mr. Papichulo, where three of them took the top three places. These enriching experiences not only strengthen their sports skills but also their team spirit and perseverance.
We are convinced that the Lobitos skatepark has a bright future and will continue to offer young people not only a sports activity but also a place to develop their potential, strengthen their sense of community, and discover new opportunities.

”This program goes beyond putting kids on a skateboard; it helps them build confidence, create their own identity, provides physical activity, and fosters friendships and community for each child.
