The sun’s out and the surf’s rolling in, what’s not to smile about?

Ok….so work hard play hard seemed to be the motto of this week….or perhaps work sometimes and play extra hard!

Standard week here including re-painting up our Waves office, English classes…well whenever the teachers decide not to be on strike or randomly not turn up for class, oh and surfing everyday of course.  The kids are fun to teach because they actually seem really keen to learn English.  When you walk into a classroom they’re all yelling ‘hello teacher’ ….and even around town you’ll randomly hear ‘hello teacher’ or ‘Elisa Elisa.’

The surfing’s coming along…ok….have sort of destroyed my back this week….which is my own fault for not stretching or warming up, however I just didn’t want to stretch etc and give people the wrong impression that I actually know what I’m doing…which I clearly don’t.  It’s all good fun though, especially in the afternoon all the WAVES kids come down so you’ll head out and know most people in the water which is fun.

So Wednesday happened to be the 21st of one of the local guys here, and what started innocently as dinner and cake with a strategically placed Barbie doll sprawled across the top, soon turned into a night of sweaty salsa dancing in the kitchen.  It was awesome thought that we could help them party because realistically back home everyone has ridiculous 21st parties, and these guys didn’t even have any plans to celebrate.

After struggling through Thursday with an afternoon surf to wake us all up, it was time to start getting pumped for the party town Mancora.  All of us caught the bus down Saturday arvo, and kicked off the night with deliciously fresh Ceviche (traditional seafood dish) on the coast.  Ended up partying at the hostel and heading out to explore the nightlife Mancora has to offer: all somehow making it back in 1 piece.  Needless to say, the bus trip home definitely wasn’t as chirpy as the one there.  However was great to end the week by lying on the beach, talking c… and watching the stars.

Morning after ice cream

The 2 other volunteers are leaving today and tomorrow, so I’ll be the token white chic for a couple of days until Friday when we have a heap of medical people flying in.

The sun’s out and the surf’s rolling in, what’s not to smile about?  Cheers everyone for an eventful week!
