'Possibly the best end to a week ever!'
04 Jun 2012by WAVES Volunteer
Ok, week 2 down and I have no idea where to start. Firstly I suppose an update on the Spanish and surfing, surfing is coming along nicely, the language not so much. Although think I’ve pretty much got the hang of Spanish surf lingo, it kind of works out well catching waves and practicing Spanish between sets.
The local guys have been amazing, taking me out every day without me even having to ask and literally spending hours just floating next to me pushing me onto waves….most patient guys going around is all I can say. The fact that I’m pretty much 1 of only a handful of girls in town may help also. Already well on the way to developing massive surfer gun arms from surfing twice a day everyday…not the most feminine looks going around but hey! I’ve also noticed that literally everyone in Peru knows how to woof whistle, even the motor taxi horns sound like woof whistles.
This week has been filled up with attending English classes, surfing twice a day with our local buddies, and painting up the surf shop which we’ve just opened up. It’s basically just a little surf centre that we’ve got local guys working in and that offers a sweet little spot for the locals to hang.
We also got to judge the primary school kids drawing competition, which was pretty cute. One kid even drew me surfing in his picture! Winners got a drawing pack which they were absolutely stoked with. Also the kindergarten kids do a little parade where they all dress up in massive costumes and parade themselves around town…just as they had all loaded themselves into the truck, the truck managed to fall into one of the many random giant holes in Lobitos, sending Peruvian kinder kid screams all over town.
Our volunteer coordinator Pim was due back this weekend, so as welcome back we spent the arvo painting his room pink, and filled with butterflys, catterpillars and some nice flower assortments. He actually kind of likes it though!
Possibly the best end to a week ever, getting up at 6am to watch the sunrise whilst catching waves. Was so ridiculous, just 4 of us Waves crew were the only people in the water for the first hour, and I got the first wave of the day wooo! Followed by a night hanging at the beach, watching our pro Waves buddies catch the massive swell under the moonlight.
