Lobitos Skate Contest Version 2.

22 Oct 2012by

On October 13th WAVES for Development held its second skate contest in Lobitos and it turned out a great success. The event was held at the Waves land that is located across from the surf shop and volunteer house in Nuevo Lobitos. A lively crowd gathered on the land stating at 5 pm made up of both local Lobitos community members and visiting surfers who came out to support the skate contest participants.  With speakers thumping music into the night air and surf videos being projected onto the Waves hut the crowd and the contestants were ready to get the contest started.

Warm up session

At 7 pm the contest was kicked off with the 16 and under age group that had four very talented participants. Each participant had three minutes to show off their best tricks and impress the judges. Following the group was the 16 and up contestants with a total of 8 participants. Amongst the skaters in this group were two surfers staying at local hostels who had a great time on the ramp with the local kids of Lobitos. After two hours of skating the final marks were made and the judges handed out some incredible prizes. First, Second and third place winners got skate decks from Plan B skateboards. First place winners from the two age groups also received Philips headphones from Clavijo Electronica.

A contestant from Australia staying at a nearby hostel won the 16 and up age group and gave his prize to a young boy from Lobitos who entered the contest after just learning to skate recently. This act of generosity encompassed the feeling of the evening as locals, volunteers, Waves staff members and visitors came together to create an incredible night of skating and giving.

oh yeah!

In the end the event raised $66 through the sale of hamburgers and the registration fee of  the skate participants. The money raised will be used to purchase more materials for the community garden that is being built and cared for by the children in Waves Environmental Classes. The Waves staff and volunteers look forward to organizing the next skate contest and get the town ready for its First Annual Surf Contest that is to be held at the end of February 2013.
