International Surfing Day
17 Jun 2011by WAVES VolunteerJune 20th 2011 marks the seventh anniversary of International Surfing day, founded by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine. This year over two hundred events will take place globally, and one of them will be right here in Lobitos. International Surfing Day celebrates not only the
sport of surfing, but also the awareness of the state of our oceans, waves and beaches. Here in Lobitos WAVES will be hosting a beach clean up at las Capullanas; a beach surrouned by sand dunes, complete with huge rock caves, but heavily polluted by the nearby town of Talara. We’ve promoted throughout the town with posters and through word of mouth about the event to take place. We are expecting a range of people to attend including travelling surfers, local youth and kids from the schools where we teach, local adults and of course the WAVES staff and volunteers. On Monday afternoon we will meet at the WAVES house and have organized transportation to take us on the fifteen minute ride south to las Capullanas. It will be a great chance for everyone to hang out, have fun, make some new friends and give back to their ocean!
