What time is it? It's WAVES time!

Good evening from a balmy evening in Lobitos Peru, where the Hospedaje Surf Natural hostal staff and the WAVES staff, especially Dave and Sam, are taking excellent care of us! It is exciting, and a relief, to write this first blog post from the comfort of our new ¨home away from home,¨ complete with comfortable beds, even more comfortable hammocks in the courtyard, private bathrooms for each room and a great outdoor area to eat with a fridgerator stocked full of treats for us! Everyone is here, healthy, safe, and finally sleeping. 🙂
We arrived here in Lobitos just before 11 am this morning, after a pretty LONG itinerary, involving one delayed flight. The 12 GLC students were troopers and took care of themselves, each other, and their belongings as we went from NYC to Newark NJ to Houston TX to Lima Peru to Talara Peru and finally a bus ride here to Lobitos. They have won the ¨world class traveler¨ award individually and as a group, and fortunately on our way home the flights won’t all be back to back!
First impressions will come tomorrow from a student blogger. However, some first experiences of Lobitos: seeing the ocean, the oil rigs, the famous waves and the dock with fishermens’ boats, and enjoying the fresh fruit (mangos!) at the hostal. We split into small groups for lunch, each accompanied by a WAVES staff member or current volunteer who showed us around town as we walked to a local family’s house to eat. We were served everything from homemade ceviche to fish, rice, and lentils, and enjoyed our first taste of Peruvian family hospitality. Throughout the week we will rotate the groups to different homes for lunch.
We then took the much-anticipated dip in the ocean, in water that was a perfect in-between of not too cold OR too warm, enjoying the chance to goof off and cool off in the 80 degree weather. We walked back in the windy sunshine to the hostal, already knowing our way around this part of this small town, and had a run-down of WAVES history and safety procedures with Dave and Sam. After a delicious dinner here at the hostal, we rounded up with our first on-site team meeting. The chaperones, now called the ¨Peruvian Mamas,¨ are all proud of the intrepid, curious, open-minded GLC student ambassadors and we are looking forward to reading their thoughts and experiences on the blog in the week ahead!
