Happy International Surfing Day - A Special Release

20 Jun 2014by

I remember the first time I celebrated International Surfing Day. It was while I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru nine years ago. Somehow I found myself in Lobitos. I had read about it in a popular surfing magazine and thought it was a great idea. As luck would have it, some of the best Peruvian surfers were also in Lobitos. Perhaps thinking it was already a bigger deal than it was, I enthusiastically wished Sofia Mulanovich and Gabriel Villaran “Happy International Surfing Day”. Not sure if it was my poor Spanish/English combination, I gave my best interpretation of what I thought it meant to me – celebrating the ocean, waves and beaches and doing our part for the next generation. We chatted and walked along the beach picking up trash on our way to the Piscinas wave. It was a great day…

And today is another great day – one where I get to share the next chapter of using surfing to make the world a better place – in yet another creative way. Last month some more great people and dear friends came to Lobitos. For many, it wasn’t the first time. For others it was. What we had in common was a desire to share and learn together. What made it unique? The fact that we were a group of not only surfers, but professional photographers and award winning film makers. It was also the beginnings of some cool new partnerships and initiatives. Proyecto Iris. Lobitos REC. HEP, Lobitos Cinema Project.  The initial results? Watch the video… Over the next few weeks we’ll be releasing more of the content that was generated. Sound interesting? Learn more on the Digital Arts page.
