Make a change @ Waves
03 Feb 2011by Dave AaboFeel like you realy can make a diference, in an amazing, friendly, beautifull and welcomeing environment.
After a few days I got used to my new environment and people, and they made me feel very welcome. Working for waves for development realy felt like helping a great family of friends.
The house is verry basic, but Don Tinoco and Dona Meche make sure you’ll have everything you need. They are verry friendly people And you can alwais ask them for anything.
What about the work…. I did’nt even feel like I was working. Nothing is better than seeing a kid smile when they just paddled and rode a wave.(you’ll feel so proud of them)+ Holggers is a great surf instructor, and can also help you surf beter.
English and environmental clases are also a lot of fun to participate in. The teachers are verry open for suggestions and learning or doing new things in their clases.
Ofcourse the volunteers also have a great time outside of the project. Think about going to local trips together (The caves, or with a small local boat to the oil platforms)
Tip: think about if/or what kind of project or event you might like to start there.
Bring some english kids books.
I think the diference WAVES for Development makes is the way they do the caring for the environment and community. For example: In stead of telling people what to do, we help a local woman with her environmental classes and projects. Few weeks ago there was one of our vulunteers teaching her some sience experiments that she could use in her clases.
Every time we take the kids to the beach for surfing class, we take 5 minutes to all (kids, instructors, vulunteers)pick up rubbish and put it in a garbage bag. A few times a year there is a big beach clean up where kids, volunteers and the local comunity picks up rubbish, and drink some chicha morada after.
WAVES for Development is verry apreciated by the local comunity.
Overall I could advise this organisation to everyone that likes traveling, surfing and would like to do someting great for the locals.
