WAVES for Development creates life-enriching experiences in coastal communities through Educational Surf programs that develop youth into healthy & empowered adults and Surf Voluntourism programs that engage travelers & transform their world view. Our community-based programs promote:

Goal 1: Life Skills / Healthy Living

Life Skills/Healthy Living classes build personal and social skills through a variety of experiential learning activities, including swimming, surfing, and English classes. These activities promote effective communication, self confidence, interest in continued learning and living healthy.

Goal 2: Environmental Conservation

The focus of environmental conservation classes is increasing participants connection to the earth. In addition to developing a special relationship with the natural environment through surfing and adventure activities, youth participants learn about direct conservation actions they can take, the importance of biodiversity, and environmentally responsible technologies.

Goal 3: Social Entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship classes offer participants training to develop business skills that make their community a better place. The aim is to create businesses that are profitable, sustainable, and serve the community utilizing local resources. Through hands-on experience, new entrepreneurs learn to contribute to their community, conduct feasibility studies, manage small businesses, and are employed in the tourism industry.

Goal 4: Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable Tourism advances community driven development efforts through Surf Voluntourism programs that blend surfing and service opportunities, including youth development activities.
